Fame! Notoriety!

I really love living in Upstate New York.  From the natural beauty to the extremely tame traffic during the work week, it totally beats the concrete and hectic nature of bigger cities – at least on a day-to-day basis, in my opinion.  Even as a runner in upstate, there are certain bragging rights that come with tackling the hilly terrain and freezing temperatures that are par for the course – they make us some of the toughest runners around 😉  However, it’s hard to ignore the fact that we are largely overshadowed by our friends in the big city.  You only have to travel once or twice and tell people you’re from New York to have the experience of them automatically respond with questions about Times Square or Central Park.

There's a whole huge state up here!

There’s a whole huge state up here!

It shouldn’t be much of a surprise that upstate running tends to be overshadowed by the larger NYRR events downstate.  Sure, we have the Boilermaker, but that certainly doesn’t rival events like the NYC Marathon.

So imagine my surprise as I was flipping through the most recent issue of Runner’s World to find this little gem in the pages …

Lake Effect Half Marathon!

Lake Effect Half Marathon!

I ran this race last year and oh man … it was a killer.  In true Syracuse style, a snow storm hit that morning, giving the gift of 33* temps, 4″ of snow, and winds up to 37mph at race time.  It’s a double out and back, so my even effort splits were ~7:30 in one direction and ~9:30 in the other!  Absolutely crazy, but such a fun time.

The race sold out last year, and has already sold out this year – even before the issue came out!  Goes to show how many crazies of us there are up here if last year’s weather didn’t discourage.  I know the RD and a ton of running friends ran last year, so seeing this in RW was almost as cool as it would be to see myself in RW.  (I actually let out a squeee when I saw it, I am sosososo lame.)

Has anyone ever been in or known someone in Runner’s World?  Any local races that are near and dear to your heart?

I can’t imagine what it’s like to be running a race during a snowstorm! Probably very pretty but slippery/dangerous. And very cool that it was featured in the magazine!

It was definitely all of the above 😀 It’s fun to talk about after the fact but it was probably the worst 13 miles of my life!
