Unpredictable

14 Dec

One of the things that frustrates me most about running is how damn unpredictable it can be.  Yesterday was a bad run.  Just bad.  For absolutely no reason whatsoever.

Temperature was around 45*, the sun was shining without a cloud in the sky – it was essentially a picture perfect winter day for Upstate New York.  There was a light wind, about 10mph – nothing earth shattering.  And for whatever reason, it just aggravated me.

Every direction I turned, it seemed like the wind was ever present.  Couldn’t get a tailwind to save my life.  The more I couldn’t escape it, the more it irritated me.

Then I started imagining my shins hurting.  And my breathing was getting heavier.  And I just. Hated. Running.

Unimpressed

Aggravated runner is aggravated … err … unimpressed.

So I cut the planned 6 miles short to finish with 3.5 on the day.  A measly 3.5.  Then, I collapsed in the backseat of my car in a highly dramatic fashion and pouted for a minute or two.  Which made me feel even more awful, until I soothed my sorrows with some Breckenridge Christmas Ale at the end of the day.  But I digress.

I went into today’s lunch run absolutely dreading it.  The weather was pretty much identical conditions to yesterday, but a slightly stronger wind.  I expected to be slightly more aggravated by it.

Somehow, someway … magic happened.  Holding an 8:10 pace was happening naturally, my shins felt fine, breathing was controlled, everything was just a little bit shinier.

I really have no explanation.  Running confuses me.  But I guess I’m happy for the absolutely shittastic runs because they make the good ones that much sweeter.

You’re right – you have to have some bad runs in there so that you appreciate the good ones.

We all have those days. Funny how something so “simple” as running could be so difficult to understand.
