I didn’t want to start doing weekly recaps until more interesting things started happening in my training. I put together an 18-week plan, but the first 5-6 weeks were really more about base building. Week 7 was the first week where shit started getting real (and by that, I mean, included what I would consider to be my first long run – terrifying).
Monday 7/15: 40 minutes very easy, Boilermaker recovery. 4.1 miles.
Tuesday 7/16: Would’ve been a hills workout, but followed coach’s instruction to skip the workout if you actually raced Boilermaker. I was on the fence about whether or not my effort really qualified as racing it, but chose to play it safe. 45 minutes very easy, 4.86 miles.
Wednesday 7/17: What in the world is this heatbox oh god this must be what Hollie runs in every day I’m going to die. 50 minutes, not very easy at all (heat really impacted my pace here), 5.48 miles.
Thursday 7/18: More extreme heat and humidity. Wanted to do an hour, cut it short at 47 minutes due to a weird and sudden Achilles twinge that wouldn’t go away. 5.06 miles.
Friday 7/19: Unplanned rest day due to Achilles ache. It’s not a traditional trouble spot for me so I wanted to play it safe. Also, sports massage day! Bonus points to me for super smart recovery tactics.
Saturday 7/20: Between a rest day, massage, and about a 10 degree dip in temperature, I felt AMAZING. In true trying-to-become-a-hippie-runner style, I didn’t even wear a watch. I know we went for 2 hours and 45 minutes on beautiful trails (per my friend’s watch :)), and I’ll throw down a conservative average of 10min/mile pace and say I put 16.5 miles on the day.
Sunday 7/21: 55 minutes, easy, 6.04 miles.
I am so psyched about this week of training, and honestly, the way it’s been going thus far. I haven’t deviated hardly at all from my plan, and definitely haven’t shortened any workouts or long runs (which has been my typical M.O. in marathon training to date).
Let’s keep this up, eh? Wineglass is only 11 weeks away!
